I’m what you’d call Upper-Middle Poor

Hi, I’m a 33-year-old millennial with a blog, I live at home, and identify as Upper-Middle Poor.

You know that weird space that’s not quite poverty but a few months without a job and it could be. It’s comfortable enough that I don’t need to water down my lotion anymore but not so comfortable that I can afford to rent on my own.

A few years ago I decided to turn my finances around and discovered there weren’t people like me in the finance space. Every source I could find catered to those with incomes triple my own who were only interested in maxing out retirement accounts or travel hacking with credit card points. Things I didn’t have or even have access to! There were just no fellow Upper-Middle Poors to commiserate or grow with me.

At that time, in 2019, I was making $23,000/year. I knew there were other people like me, in similar situations, wanting to find a financial space that would make it make sense to us. That offered real advice our salaries could handle. When I couldn’t find it, I made it. Then I won an award for it.

Since 2019, I’ve raised my salary to $35,000/year and am hella studious about making that money work as hard as possible.

I share all the shit. The stuff that works and doesn’t work with small incomes. Where I have advantages others don’t. Stupid shit I spend my money on. How being bipolar affects my money and vice versa. All of it. My IG stories are amazing too.

Look, we Upper-Middle Poors might not be able to max out 401ks on January 1st (or at all) or buy cars straight cash, but we are thrifty af with our money. We’re coming out of the struggle years working to find some balance and financial security. We’re using those struggle-year skills to make the most of what we have.

I got resources for you baby birds.

If you’re still in your struggle years, I see you and you’re doing better than you think you are! Check out previous blog posts for tips on how to save on your bills, go back to school for free, or just commiserate with someone who KNOWS how hard this shit is.

To my fellow Upper-Middle Poors, stick with me while I leverage my money and skills to get my cute ass from Upper-Middle Poor to I’m Doing Alright.

Follow me on Instagram or buy me an iced coffee because you love me.
